Governor’s Public Servant Mentorship Program

 mentorship opportunities

Governor Jim Pillen is dedicated to improving the lives of young Nebraskans, especially through mentorship.

Mentoring programs equip students with academic and social skulls that position them for success in life. Additionally, mentoring provides important encouragement during times of stress or difficulty. Good, supportive relationships between mentors and mentees can facilitate student success.

Two programs, administered through the Department of Administrative Services (DAS) and the Department of Economic Development (DED), provide opportunities to organizations and individuals to expand mentorship across Nebraska.

Department of Administrative Service

DAS runs the Public Servant Youth Mentorship Program for the State of Nebraska. This program matches public servants who meet eligibility requirements with mentorship organizations and mentees in their communities after a short training. Public Servants receive one hour paid leave each week for mentoring, upon approval from their supervisor.

Department of Economic Development

DED provides grants through READ Nebraska with the focus of improving the reading levels of elementary students throughout the state. To be eligible, the non-profit mentorship program must have been established in Nebraska for at least 15 years. The organization should have a reading program that tracks and reports measurable results on helping elementary students to read.
