State of Nebraska Proclamation WHEREAS, On April 19, 1775, the British arrived at Lexington and encountered more than 70 colonial militia led by Captain John Parker, at which time the "shot heard round the world" was fired, signaling the start of the War of Independence; and WHEREAS, The Declaration of Independence, adopted by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776, is one of the most important political documents in history, declaring American independence from Great Britain and enshrining our natural rights as the cornerstone of our republic; and WHEREAS, The Declaration sets forth the foundation of Western Judeo-Christian values in our federal, state, and local governments; and WHEREAS, This year presents a unique opportunity - one not collectively experienced as a nation since the 1976 Bicentennial - to reflect on the people, events and sacrifices that led to the founding of the United States, while also looking ahead to the future we seek to create for future generations to come. WHEREAS, Nebraskans will join fellow Americans in celebrating the 250th anniversary of the founding of our great nation on July 4, 2026. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Jim Pillen, Governor of the State of Nebraska, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM the 4th Day of July, 2026, as INDEPENDENCE DAY AND AMERICA'S 250th ANNIVERSARY and I encourage all Nebraskans to take due notice of this federal holiday, display their American flags, and reflect on the profound words of our founding fathers who declared, "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."
