LINCOLN – Today, Governor Pete Ricketts announced that he directed Property Tax Administrator Ruth Sorensen to send a letter to the Douglas County Board of Commissioners providing guidance on how the board can provide tax relief to taxpayers. Douglas County residential property taxpayers recently experienced significant increases in property valuations. The letter was provided to commissioners ahead of this morning’s board meeting.
“The valuation of property is the responsibility of the county assessor and county board; it is a matter of local control,” said Sorensen. “I would encourage the county assessor and the county board to work together in an effort to decrease the values in certain subclasses of property in Douglas County. An option that could be considered is to apply uniform percentage decreases to the subclasses of residential property to arrive at a level of assessment at or near 92%. This action would achieve a lower level of value for residential property and alleviate some of the valuation increases.”
