Gov. Ricketts Names Michael A. Smith to Second Judicial District Judgeship

LINCOLN – Today, Governor Pete Ricketts announced his appointment of Michael A. Smith to the Second Judicial District Court of Nebraska.



Smith, 54, is the Lead Deputy County Attorney for the Civil Division of the Sarpy County Attorney’s Office.  In this role, he advises the Sarpy County Board of Commissioners in legal matters, represents the County in civil litigation, and serves the County as counsel for a variety of legal issues.


Smith was previously an associate attorney at two law firms after working as a sole practitioner.


Smith holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Creighton University and a Juris Doctor from Creighton University School of Law.  He has received two Justice in Action Awards from the Sarpy County Attorney for his Outstanding Performance and Trial Performance.


The Second Judicial District for the District Court consists of Cass, Otoe, and Sarpy counties.


The vacancy is due to the appointment of Judge Jeffrey J. Funke to the Supreme Court.
