Gov. Ricketts Names Julie D. Smith to First Judicial District Judgeship

LINCOLN – Today, Governor Pete Ricketts announced his appointment of Julie D. Smith to the First Judicial District Court of Nebraska.


Smith, 37, serves as the General Counsel for the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services.  In her 12.5 years of practicing law in Nebraska, she has also served as a County Attorney in the Johnson County Attorney’s Office and as a Partner at Smith & Smith, Attorneys at Law.


Smith earned her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Drake University and her Juris Doctor from the University of Kansas School of Law.


The First Judicial District for the District Court consists of Clay, Fillmore, Gage, Jefferson, Johnson, Nemaha, Nuckolls, Pawnee, Richardson, Saline, and Thayer counties.  The primary place of office for the judicial vacancy is Auburn, Nebraska.


The vacancy is due to the retirement of Judge Daniel E. Bryan, Jr. effective December 31, 2016.
