Governor’s Economic Development Summit.

LINCOLN – Governor Pete Ricketts, State teammates, and over 450 community leaders and economic development professionals gathered today in Lincoln for the annual Governor’s Summit on Economic Development.

“This event is a unique opportunity for those who are working to grow Nebraska to come together and discuss the opportunities and challenges that lay ahead,” said Gov. Ricketts.  “This year’s Summit broke previous attendance records.  The strong participation from our state’s business and economic development leaders demonstrates their commitment to growing Nebraska.”

The annual Governor’s Summit, traditionally held in July, is the premier forum for statewide economic issues.  This year’s Summit was held at the Lincoln Marriott Cornhusker Hotel.  It focused on the theme of workforce development.  The Nebraska Department of Economic Development (DED) organized the event, in partnership with the Nebraska Chamber of Commerce & Industry, and the Nebraska Community Foundation.  Nearly a dozen sponsors contributed to the event.

The Summit kicked off this morning with a welcome from DED Director Dave Rippe and opening remarks from Gov. Ricketts.  Throughout the day, attendees participated in an array of breakout sessions featuring topics ranging from skilled labor availability to workforce housing.  Over 60 panelists and speakers participated in the day’s sessions.

“Today’s guests and speakers come from different communities and different parts of the state, but have gathered here to discuss the core economic issues that impact us all as Nebraskans,” said DED Director Dave Rippe.  “The more we listen and learn from each other, the more equipped we’ll be to pursue opportunities to create an even better Nebraska.”

Over the noon hour, Gallup CEO & Chairman Jim Clifton addressed a packed ballroom.  He shared insights from his bestselling book, Born to Build, and discussed practical applications of them.  Clifton has served as CEO of Gallup since 1988.  He is also the creator of both the Gallup Path—a metrics-based model that links human traits to business performance—and the Gallup World Poll, which aims to give the world’s citizens a voice on key global issues.

Today’s Summit closed with a late afternoon reception hosted by the Nebraska Diplomats.
