Gov. Ricketts Honored for “Courageous Defense of the Unborn” by the Thomas More Society

Gov. Ricketts honored with the “Courageous Defense of the Unborn” award by the Thomas More Society.

OMAHA – On Friday night, Governor Pete Ricketts received the “Courageous Defense of the Unborn” award from the Thomas More Society.  The award recognizes the work of Governor Ricketts, who has successfully advocated for several pro-life initiatives.

“The right to life is foundational to the integrity of our republic,” said Governor Ricketts.  “This award is recognition of the outstanding work pro-life advocates have done at the State Capitol.  I appreciate the contributions made by so many Nebraskans.  We are a pro-life state, and we will continue to fight to protect the unborn and our most vulnerable Nebraskans.”

The Thomas More Society is “a not-for-profit, national public interest law firm dedicated to restoring respect in law for life, family, and religious liberty.”  The society presents awards regularly to individuals in the pro-life movement for their commitment and effort to work for positive changes.

“We are grateful for Governor Ricketts’ leadership, dedication, and commitment to ensuring that babies’ lives are protected and nurtured here in Nebraska and beyond,” said Edward A. Morse, Thomas More Society Board Member.  “Together with pro-life legislators and other elected officials, Governor Ricketts has given a voice to those who are most vulnerable and who need our protection.  The Thomas More Society is pleased to recognize and honor him at this ninth annual Omaha banquet.”

Over the past few years, Governor Ricketts has worked with Nebraska’s pro-life advocates to champion several initiatives.  These initiatives include:

  • New Pro-Life Budget Language: In 2018, the Governor and the Legislature approved important new budget language which ensures that taxpayer dollars do not fund abortion services, including abortions, abortion counseling, or abortion referrals.
  • Pro-Life License Plate: In 2017, senators came together to pass legislation creating the “Choose Life” license plate.  This was the first pro-life legislation that had been passed in years.  Today, you will see many cars with these beautiful license plates.  The plates display a picture of a mother walking through a field while holding hands with her young child.
  • Perinatal Hospice Care: In 2017, Senator Joni Albrecht helped pass the “Compassion and Care for Medically Challenging Pregnancies Act.”  This act allows physicians who diagnose unborn children with a fetal anomaly to provide the parents with information pertaining to perinatal hospice care.  Before this legislation, many parents were provided minimal options when given a serious medical diagnosis during the early stages of a pregnancy.
  • Commemorative Certificates: In 2018, Senator Albrecht carried another bill, LB 1040, which provides for commemorative certificates of nonviable birth to mothers who miscarry prior to 20 weeks of gestation.  With this new bill, the state is now recognizing the loss that parents feel with every miscarriage.
  • Maternity Leave Donation Program: In January 2018, Governor Ricketts announced a new maternity leave donation program for state teammates.  At his direction, expecting mothers or new mothers who work for the state can receive donated vacation and compensatory time from their co-workers to expand their own paid time off while on family medical leave.
