LINCOLN – Today, Governor Pete Ricketts joined representatives from the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of the United States of America (Elks) to celebrate their 150th anniversary.  At a ceremony held in the State Capitol’s Wherry Room, the Governor proclaimed the weekend of April 27th-29th as “The Elks 150th Anniversary Celebration Weekend.”

“Organizations like the Elks weave the fabric of society that binds the Good Life together,” said Governor Ricketts.  “For 150 years, Elks Lodges have been bringing people together to help make our communities more charitable and patriotic.  Their commitment to investing in our communities helps ensure that Nebraska remains the best place in the world to live, work, and raise a family.”

There are 19 Elks Lodges in Nebraska that are spread throughout the entire state.  Each lodge works to provide community service and support, investing in community centers, schools, and events.  Founded in 1868, Elks has grown to contain over 2,000 Elks Lodges and over 850,000 members nationwide.  Each year, the Elks commit more than $80 million to community programs and scholarships.

“Dedicated to charity, patriotism, drug awareness, youth and veterans, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks has donated more than $6 billion in cash, gifts and time over the course of its 150 year history reaching out to improve quality of life and make our communities better places to live,” said Bradley Norton, vice president of the Nebraska Elks Association.  “It is an honor and privilege, to be part its heritage, and Nebraska Elks pledge to continue our commitment to selflessly serving communities throughout the great state of Nebraska.”

ELKS’ MISSION STATEMENT

“To inculcate the principles of Charity, Justice, Brotherly Love and Fidelity; to recognize a belief in God; to promote the welfare and enhance the happiness of its Members; to quicken the spirit of American patriotism; to cultivate good fellowship; to perpetuate itself as a fraternal organization, and to provide for its government, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of the United States of America will serve the people and communities through benevolent programs, demonstrating that Elks Care and Elks Share.”
