Gov. Ricketts’ Constitution Day Statement

LINCOLN – Today, Governor Pete Ricketts issued the following statement in observance of Constitution Day.  Constitution Day is observed on September 17, 2019.

“Written in 1787, the United States Constitution serves as the basis of our republican system of government.  The principles it sets forth, such as the separation of powers and federalism, have been a source of strength and stability for our Republic for over 230 years.  The civil and political rights it enumerates are the bulwarks of the ordered liberty we enjoy as a nation.”

“On this Constitution Day, we give thanks for the wisdom and foresight of the Founders of our country.  We also recall the bravery of the many women and men who have died to protect our constitutional rights.”

“At this time in our nation’s history, it is also fitting to reflect on a quote from Plato chiseled into the walls of our State Capitol rotunda.  ‘Laws and constitutions spring from the moral dispositions of the members of the state.’  Truthfulness, respect for law, and a commitment to live together in unity—these dispositions nourish our constitutional freedoms.  Our national greatness depends on sustaining these shared moral habits.  Let’s work together to strengthen them."
