(Lincoln, NE) Gov. Dave Heineman today reminded government agencies, businesses and private citizens that all U.S. and Nebraska flags are to be flown at half-staff on Monday, May 15 in observance of Peace Officers Memorial Day.
Gov. Heineman said, “This is a day to remember not only the brave men and women who have fallen in the line of duty, but those who carry on their legacy of bravery and service in their duties today.”
In 1994, a federal law was enacted requiring the American flag to be lowered to half-staff every May 15 as a special tribute to the more than 15,000 law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty.
In Nebraska, 128 officers have lost their lives in the line of duty since 1866. Those who have made the ultimate sacrifice include federal, state, county, municipal and tribal agency officers, as well as railroad, game and parks, and correctional officers.
The Governor will speak at public ceremony being held in the State Capitol Rotunda in Lincoln to honor fallen officers at 10:00 a.m. on Monday.
