(Lincoln, NE) Gov. Dave Heineman launched Nebraska’s first wireless Internet service for visitors at one of Nebraska’s state parks. Beginning today, visitors to Eugene T. Mahoney State Park will have free access to e-mail and Internet Web sites.
“Internet and e-mail communication have quickly become a major part of our everyday lives that the availability of Internet access is something travelers look for when making travel arrangements,” Gov. Heineman said. “It’s important to respond to that need and by providing wireless Internet access we hope to attract more campers, visitors and conference planners to Mahoney State Park.”
The wireless service is available to all visitors at several locations throughout the park, including Peter Kiewit Lodge, the Lee and Helene Sapp Riverview Lodge and at the Lakeside Camp Ground. Options for expanding wireless access to additional sites within the park are under consideration.
Gov. Heineman said, “Mahoney State Park is a popular destination for meetings and conferences held year-round. The availability of Internet access will allow presenters to more easily share information from Web sites, and allow conference participants to stay in touch with their co-workers and families during their visit.”
The project was a joint effort of the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, Mahoney staff and state division of communications. Game and Parks officials will consider whether demand exists to expand the wireless Internet service to other state parks.
Occupying nearly 700 acres along the Platte River, Mahoney State Park is one of Nebraska’s most popular state parks hosting more than one million visitors each year. The park offers a wide range of lodging, meeting facilities and activities including a family aquatic center, miniature golf and horseback trail rides.
