Gov. Heineman Orders Flags to Half-Staff
in Honor of U.S. Rep. Virginia Smith
(Lincoln, NE) Gov. Dave Heineman today ordered all state and U.S. flags in Nebraska be flown at half-staff on Friday, January 27, 2006, in honor of the life and service of U.S. Rep. Virginia Smith, who passed away Monday in Arizona.
Rep. Smith, 94, served Nebraska's third congressional district – located primarily in central and western Nebraska – with distinction. Public funeral services are planned for 11 a.m. MT Friday at the United Methodist Church, 346 Babcock Ave, in Chappell.
Gov. Heineman, who plans to attend the funeral, said, "Virginia Smith went to Washington and made a difference in the daily lives of ordinary Nebraskans. She set the standard by which all public servants should be judged in terms of citizen responsiveness and in terms of hard work. The Congresswoman will be sorely missed, but always remembered."
