Gov. Heineman Commends the Life
and Service of U.S. Rep. Virginia Smith

(Lincoln, NE) Gov. Dave Heineman today issued the following statement on the passing of former U.S. Congresswoman Virginia Smith, who served central and western Nebraska with distinction from 1975 to 1991:

Gov. Heineman said, "I knew Congresswoman Smith from my time in Washington DC, and I can tell you that she was a legendary friend to Nebraska farmers and ranchers and a strong advocate for all that is good in our great State. Our State today has lost a true voice for rural Nebraskans, but we will not forget her legacy of leadership."

The Governor plans to issue an order to fly all U.S. and Nebraska state flags at half-staff on the date of Congresswoman Smith's funeral, once a date is determined. The Smith family is in the process of making funeral arrangements.
