(Lincoln, NE) Gov. Dave Heineman today announced his appointment of Jodi Nelson as district court judge for the Third Judicial District, which includes Lancaster County.
“Ms. Nelson’s wide range of experience as an attorney, an instructor and a community leader is very impressive,” Gov. Heineman said. “The fact that she has spent her entire career working to address issues in this county a gives me confidence that she will be an excellent addition to its district court.”
Nelson has worked in the Lancaster County Attorney’s Office since 1989. She has been the chief deputy of the Juvenile Division since 1999 and is the administrator of the juvenile pre-trial diversion program. In addition, she has been an adjunct professor of business law at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln (UNL) College of Business Administration since 1999. Prior to beginning her work with the Juvenile Division, she worked for 10 years as a deputy county attorney handling criminal cases.
She began her legal career in the private sector as an associate with Lott Law Office in Lincoln, where she worked from 1987 to 1989, and was an instructor in paralegal services with the Lincoln School of Commerce from 1988 to 1989.
Nelson, 42, is a member of the Nebraska State Bar Association and has served on the Nebraska County Attorneys Association Board of Directors since 2003. She is chairwoman of the Lancaster County Child Abuse Investigation and Treatment Teams, and has provided training to the Nebraska Foster Parents Association and as part of the Court Appointed Special Advocate program.
She was honored by the Lincoln Child Advocacy Center in 2004 for her involvement and support of the organization, and from 1994 to 2002 was as a member of the CenterPointe, Inc. Board of Directors, serving as President of the board from 2000-2002.
Nelson earned her bachelor’s degree in sociology and social work from Nebraska Wesleyan University and received her law degree from UNL in 1987.
