(Lincoln, NE) Gov. Dave Heineman is encouraging Nebraskans to attend the 7th Annual Governor's Conference on Preventing Youth Violence and Substance Abuse being held Friday, Oct. 14, in Lincoln at the Embassy Suites, 1040 P St.
"This year's conference focuses on the use of methamphetamine and steroids, and there are few challenges more detrimental to our young people than the abuse of such drugs," Gov. Heineman said. "Nebraska has taken significant steps this year in stemming the tide against meth, but there is still much to be done to avoid the suffering and long-term damage caused by these drugs. This conference is one way to bring Nebraskans together to help identify warning signs and teach preventative measures."
Participants in this year's conference will have an opportunity to hear a keynote address on youth steroid use from Frank Uryasz, founder and director of Drug Free Sport, which administers the drug-testing programs of the National Collegiate Athletic Association. Uryasz is also a former member of the U.S. Olympic Committee Anti-Doping Committee. His presentation will be followed by a panel discussion on steroid abuse.
The conference's afternoon session will feature a keynote speech on methamphetamine use by young people, followed by a panel discussion. James Copple has facilitated 14 statewide summits on methamphetamine prevention and enforcement over the past 10 years. He helped found the Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America and was vice president and chief operating officer of the National Crime Prevention Council.
The $35 conference registration fee includes lunch and is due by Tuesday, Oct. 11. Registration information is available by calling the Nebraska Health and Human Services System (HHSS) at (402) 463-5611, ext. 141, or by visiting the HHSS Web site at http://www.hhss.ne.gov and clicking the link labeled "Governor's Conference on Preventing Youth Violence and Substance Abuse."
