(Lincoln, NE) Roughly 60 soldiers from the Nebraska Army National Guard’s 1618th Truck Company are being mobilized in support of Hurricane Rita relief efforts. The 1618th Truck Company, headquartered in Kearney and with detachments in McCook and Lexington, departs for Louisiana from the Kearney armory at 9:00 a.m. Sunday.
“Our nation continues to seek the well-trained aid of the Nebraska National Guard, and our citizen-soldiers continue to excel when called upon,” Gov. Dave Heineman said. “We appreciate the selfless service and sacrifices of all of our troops and their families.”
The Nebraska unit’s exact mission is under development. Missions may include search and rescue, food and water distribution, security operations, support of law enforcement and assisting civilian shelters. The soldiers will initially report to Alexandria, La., and will then be assigned to other locations across the affected region. Approximately one-third of the 1618th Truck Company is participating in hurricane relief operations.
The mission is expected to last 31 days, but could be extended to 45 days if necessary.
