(Lincoln, NE) Gov. Dave Heineman has signed an executive order today intended to speed delivery of about 150,000 mobile homes to house people and emergency service workers in the areas affected by Hurricane Katrina.
The order waives vehicle size and weight regulations for commercial vehicles towing single-wide or double-wide mobile homes through the State of Nebraska over the next 90 days. It maintains requirements for commercial driver licenses.
“Our status as a transportation corridor means that we must be adaptable in this time of national need,” Gov. Heineman said. “We have been asked by federal officials to assist the victims of Hurricane Katrina in this way, and we are glad to help.”
Another federal waiver, this one from the Environmental Protection Agency to allow U.S. sales of higher-sulfur-content diesel fuel, required an executive order and gubernatorial waiver to allow sales of the fuel in Nebraska through Sept. 15.
“Because of Interstate 80 and the railroad network, our state plays a crucial role in national commerce, particularly in the delivery of goods and services,” Gov. Heineman said. “This EPA adaptation allows for the flexibility to avoid diesel shortages, and I am grateful.”
