(Lincoln, NE) The work of Nebraska’s AmeriCorps volunteers will be honored at 9:15 a.m. CT, tomorrow, July 29, at the AmeriCorps Year-End Reflection, in the Grand Ballroom at The Villager Courtyard and Gardens, 5200 O St., in Lincoln.
The Nebraska Volunteer Service Commission (NVSC) hosts the AmeriCorps Year-End Reflection with support from the AmeriCorps Inter-Corps Council. The celebration highlights the annual successes of all seven of the state's AmeriCorps programs in strengthening communities through coordinated volunteer efforts.
First Lady Sally Ganem, honorary chairwoman of the NVSC, said, "These volunteer programs provide important services to communities in our state. It is my hope that Nebraskans will see and follow the positive examples of these young volunteers."
During the past year, 109 AmeriCorps state and national direct members have given more than 150,000 hours of service to local organizations and institutions. In return for their service, members received a small monthly stipend of about $800 and an education award. This year's allotment of education awards will total more than $420,000.
The addition of workshops, led by representatives from the Omaha Public Power District, the Peace Corps, Saint Elizabeth Regional Medical Center, the State of Nebraska, the College of St. Mary, Nebraska Workforce Development and other organizations will add a networking element to the celebration that has not been present in past years.
Highlights of the year-end celebration will include: A transferable skills and career-building presentation by College of St. Mary careers and retention specialist Jen McCarthy; roundtables with organization and business leaders designed to transition AmeriCorps members into professional positions and educational opportunities; and presentations by each Nebraska AmeriCorps program highlighting accomplishments from the past year in strengthening their communities.
The NVSC works to strengthen Nebraska's spirit of service through partnerships, national service, volunteerism and promotion of service. The Commission is headed by up to 25 Governor-appointed volunteer Commissioners and six staff members. For more details about the NVSC, visit http://www.nvsc.ne.gov
