Gov. Heineman Comments on
State Tax Receipts for Fiscal Year 2004-05
(Lincoln, NE) Gov. Dave Heineman today expressed confidence in the growing strength of Nebraska's economy after receiving word of the June 2005 and Fiscal Year 2004-05 General Fund receipts compiled by the Nebraska Department of Revenue (NDOR), but warned against overlooking the long-term challenges the state faces.
Total state general fund net receipts for fiscal year 2004-2005, which ended last month, came in at roughly $3.04 billion, an increase of more than 9 percent, or $261 million, over the certified projection of roughly $2.78 billion from February 2004. The final numbers are also more than $48 million above the most recent projections in April 2005 of the Nebraska Economic Forecasting Advisory Board.
Gov. Heineman said, "These numbers offer some unexpected relief for state coffers after years of difficult times. With that said, I remain committed to the imperative that we in government take a long-term view of all state commitments and resist any temptations to spend freely. This is and will always be the people's money, and it should be respected as such."
