Funeral for Gov. Exon to Be Held in
Nebraska State Capitol Rotunda
(Lincoln, NE) Nebraskans are invited to attend funeral services for former U.S. Senator and Governor Jim Exon on Wednesday, June 15, at the State Capitol in Lincoln. Set-up for the 4 p.m. service will begin in the morning and open seating will begin at 2:00 p.m.
More than 400 chairs will be set up in the Rotunda and down the grand foyer for those attending the public service. Reserved seating will be marked. Standing room also will be available in portions of the adjoining wings and in the east and portions of the west balconies.
The casket is scheduled to arrive at the north entrance to the State Capitol at 2:30 p.m., and will be carried up the steps of the north grand entrance, into the vestibule and down the main foyer of the Capitol by honor guards from the Nebraska National Guard and Nebraska State Patrol.
The service will be led by the Rev. Sam Boman, and eulogies will be delivered by family friend Chuck Pallesen, former U.S. Senator and Nebraska Governor Bob Kerry and family members of Gov. Exon. Gov. Dave Heineman will attend the service along with U.S. Sens. Chuck Hagel and Ben Nelson, who will lead a delegation of fellow senators.
Citizens are encouraged to enter the Capitol on the north side of the building, either through the grand entrance or on the ground level where the wheelchair-accessible entrance is located. The Rotunda can be accessed by stairs and elevators located on the ground floor.
Live statewide coverage of the funeral will be provided by select Lincoln and Omaha television stations, as well as by Nebraska Educational Telecommunications. Check local listings for programming information. NET-2 will begin broadcasting from the State Capitol between 3:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. CT. The funeral will be rebroadcast Wednesday evening on NET-1, beginning at 9 p.m. CT.
Accessible elevators are located on the ground floor of the Capitol inside the north door and to the west in Room 1009, and central tower elevators located near the information desk offer limited accessibility. Public parking is available in the residential areas south of the Capitol or at nearby garages. The nearest public parking garage is located at 12th and L Streets.
