Gov. Heineman Seeks Applicants for Douglas County
Election Commissioner
(Lincoln, NE) Gov. Dave Heineman is seeking qualified candidates to serve as election commissioner for Douglas County. Carlos Castillo, Jr. recently announced that he will resign his position.
Election commissioners are charged with making rules and regulations for general, city, special and primary elections and for the registration of voters in their county. The Governor will appoint a commissioner to complete the remainder of the term, which runs through 2007.
“I look forward to reviewing the applications,” Gov. Heineman said. “This is an excellent opportunity for those interested in our civic process to not only get involved, but to lead the way in addressing the challenges of updating and preserving our electoral system in this modern age.”
To be eligible for consideration, applicants must have been a legal voter and resident of Douglas County for at least one year. Commissioners cannot seek public office, be employed by any candidate for public office or any elected official, or hold a political party office.
Individuals interested in the position should send a cover letter and resume, along with a completed application form to Whitney Bumgarner in the Governor’s Office, at P.O. Box 94848, Lincoln, NE 68509. The application form can be found on the Governor’s Web site or requested by calling the Governor’s Office. Applications will be accepted through the end of the day on Monday, June 27. Gov. Heineman may also seek out additional qualified candidates.
Nebraska law gives authority for appointing election commissioners in the state’s three largest counties to the Governor. Election commissioners in Lancaster, Douglas and Sarpy Counties cannot hold another elected office and are ineligible to be appointed to another office or become a candidate for elected office during their term of office or within six months of the expiration of their term.
The names of those submitting formal applications will be made public. Anyone with questions about the position may call the Governor’s Office at (402) 471-2244.
