Gov. Heineman Seeks Applicants for State Board of Education
(Lincoln, NE) Gov. Dave Heineman is seeking qualified candidates to represent District 1 residents on the Nebraska Board of Education. Kim Peterson recently announced that she will resign her position, effective at the end of June. She has served on the board since 1996. The Governor will appoint a new board member to complete the term, which runs through 2008.
“I wish Kim all the best and want to thank her for her willingness to serve on the Board of Education,” Gov. Heineman said. “She has been a strong advocate, and I know we will find a candidate who will represent the best interests of Nebraska students and schools as she has during the past eight years.”
To be considered for the position, applicants must meet the qualifications set out for state Board of Education members in state statute. Those not eligible for consideration include anyone actively involved in the teaching profession, as well as current state officers and members of other boards and commissions, unless the role of the board is limited to an advisory capacity.
Applicants must have lived within the boundaries of District 1 for at least six months. The district covers all but parts of northwest Lincoln and includes much of Lancaster County. A detailed map of the district and its boundaries is available on the Governor’s Web site at http://www.gov.state.ne.us(PDF: 195K). Gov. Heineman may also seek out additional qualified candidates.
Individuals interested in the position should send a cover letter and resume, along with a completed application form to Whitney Bumgarner in the Governor’s Office, at P.O. Box 94848, Lincoln, NE 68509. The application form can be found on the Governor’s Web site or requested by calling the Governor’s Office. Applications will be accepted through the end of the day on Thursday, June 30.
The names of those submitting formal applications will be made public. Anyone with questions about the position may call the Governor’s Office at (402) 471-2244.
