Gov. Heineman Hosts 13th Annual Governor’s
Conference on Community Service
(Lincoln, NE) Gov. Dave Heineman will host the 13th Annual Governor’s Conference on Community Service being held today. First Lady Sally Ganem will represent the Governor in delivering opening remarks to an audience of more than 300 volunteers and community leaders. The one-day conference, titled “Together: Growing a Stronger Nebraska” is being held at the Embassy Suites, located at 1040 P St. in Lincoln.
“This year’s conference theme could not be more timely or appropriate,” Gov. Heineman said. “Throughout our country we are experiencing fewer personal interactions and seeing a trend toward fewer partnerships. Community service stands as one of the strongest and most effective ways to reverse this trend and bring people together. Sally and I are eager to provide leadership in encouraging more Nebraskans to invest their time and energy in service to their communities.”
First Lady Sally Ganem will play a key role in celebrating accomplishments of individuals and groups who have distinguished themselves in service to others through unique contributions in their communities. The awards recognize Nebraska’s most outstanding volunteers and will be presented during the First Lady’s Outstanding Service Awards luncheon.
Other highlights planned for this year’s conference include:
• Keynote address on building social capital delivered by Husker football legend Johnny Rodgers.
• High-impact learning opportunities with sessions focused on leadership, recruiting and inspiring quality volunteers, Citizen Corps development, and ways to create a culture of civic responsibility.
• Silent auction to benefit the Volunteer and Community Service Foundation of Nebraska.
The Governor’s Conference on Community Service is presented each year as an opportunity for community developers from around the state to learn about current trends in volunteerism.
The Nebraska Volunteer Service Commission strengthens Nebraska’s spirit of service through partnerships, national service and volunteerism, and is responsible for organizing the Governor’s Conference on Community Service. The Commission is led by volunteer Commissioners appointed by the Governor. More information on this year’s conference is available online at http://www.nvsc.ne.gov.
