Gov. Heineman, Legislative Chairs to Push for Meth Study

(Lincoln, NE) Gov. Dave Heineman and the chairs of the Judiciary and Health and Human Services committees have agreed that an independent, comprehensive study is needed for a state-wide analysis of methamphetamine use and treatment in Nebraska.

“Meth is a growing problem,” Gov. Heineman said. “This study will give us the information we need to develop a comprehensive response to the effects of meth addiction.”

The study will be co-sponsored by the Legislature’s Judiciary Committee and HHS Committee. The Health and Human Services System, the Department of Correctional Services, and the State Probation Administration will be involved in the study. A request for proposals will be issued for the study, which is expected to take six months. Senators now begin the task of identifying funds to pay for the study.

In 2004, the HHSS Substance Abuse program served 3,443 people identified as having meth addictions. From May 2004 to February 2005, the Department of Correctional Services had 1,240 admissions, 480 of whom were identified as needing methamphetamine treatment. State and local law enforcement agencies, as well as the child protection system, are also among those dealing with the effects of meth addiction.

“Meth addiction and the tragic consequences that come with it are growing concerns in Nebraska,” Gov. Heineman said. “This study will identify needs and best treatment practices, and it also will evaluate current state resources, funding levels and sources.”
